Holiday destination
Thanks to its mild climate, Ghiffa is known as the "Riviera of Lake Maggiore" and is the most popular location on the Piedmont shore of the lake. Near Ghiffa is also the nature reserve Riserva Naturale del Sacro Monte della Trinità, which has been declared a Heritage of Humanity and spans over 200 hectares of forest.
Getting there
By car: Coming from Basel, take the St. Gotthard motorway to Locarno on the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore. For the drive to the west bank: continue over the border at Piaggio Valmara on the federal road 34 along the shore of Lake Maggiore. For the drive to the east bank: cross the border at Zenna and then continue on the country road 394. From Lindau (D)/Bregenz (A), take the S. Bernardino motorway to Locarno (CH) and then proceed as described above. By plane: The three airports Malpensa (MXP), Linate (LIN), and Bergamo (BGY) in Milan are served by almost all German airports. Malpensa Airport, being only 20 km away, is the most conveniently located for the southern part of the lake.

Wir hatten die Fereinwohnung im Mai 2018 für eine Woche gebucht und uns nach der ersten (schlaflosen) Nacht eine andere Unterkunft gesucht. Die Wohnung war ungepflegt; vor allem die alten Matrazen in den Schlafzimmern waren durchgelegen und strömten einen sehr penetranten und unangenhmen Geruch (nach jahrelang aufgesogenen Ausdünstungen ihrer Benutzer) aus, die Kissen auf den Sesseln waren von einer bräunlichen Schmutzschicht überzogen, zwischen den Heizkörpern sammelte sich der Staub mehrere Zentimeter hoch, das Bad war vor unserer Ankunft nur oberflächlich gereinigt worden, einige der Dielenbretter auf dem Balkon waren locker, der Zugang zum Wasser war zugewachsen, ... . Alles in allem nicht empfehlenswert.

Nachdem wir im letzten Jahr zwei Wochen als Familie dort verbracht haben, waren wir in diesem Sommer eine Woche in der Ferienwohnung. Der Blick ist immer noch herrlich, der Standard der Wohnung hat jedoch nachgelassen. Die Betten/ Matrazen sind in keinem besonders guten Zustand. Auf dem Nachbargrundstück wurden während unseres Aufenthalts mit lautem Gerät Palmen gerodet, unsere kleine Tochter konnte tagsüber nur schlecht schlafen und war entsprechend quengelig. Aufgrund der Rodungsaktivitäten ist davon auszugehen, dass das Nachbargrundstück bebaut wird. Der Verkehr der Uferstraße hat deutlich zugenommen und bei offenem Fenster war nicht an Schlaf zu denken. Die einfach verglasten Scheiben haben auch im geschlossenen Zustand den Lärm nicht wesentlich gemindert. Was ersetzt wird ist einfach.
