Nestled in the impressive foothills of the Swiss Western Alps, at the heart of the Ossola Valley and at nearly 800 meters above sea level, lies the quaint mountain village of Premia (approx. 600 inhabitants). The present municipality is a merger of former Walser settlements and attracts people from all over the world, thanks mainly to its soothing thermal spring. The spacious and well-maintained spa and thermal baths with an attached SPA area (about 5,000 sqm) sit high above the small village and are considered one of the most significant facilities in the entire Piedmont region. Besides therapeutic treatments, massages, and other services, the thermal baths offer one thing above all: impressive views of the alpine landscape. In about a 30-minute drive from Premia, you can reach the former Roman settlement of Domodossola (approx. 18,300 inhabitants). The town at the foot of the Monte Rosa massif (4635 m) is especially captivating for its well-preserved medieval old town with its winding alleys and historic palaces, giving the city a unique charm. A must-visit is the Saturday market at Piazza Mercato, where mainly regional products from the numerous valleys in the surrounding area are offered. A special attraction of the city is the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Sacro Monte di Domodossola," one of the nine sacred mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy, with its pilgrimage church from the 17th century. Premia is a perfect starting point for numerous excursions into the Swiss Western Alps and northern Piedmont. For example, Lake Maggiore with the world-famous Borromean Islands and Lake Orta are only an hour's drive away. The center of the Lombard metropolis of Milan is also easily accessible from Domodossola train station in about 1½ hours by train and offers a varied contrast program. Those who prefer idyllic and pristine nature can find, just under half an hour's drive from Premia, nestled in the Swiss High Alps, the Cascata del Toce, Europe's second-highest waterfall at 143 meters. An absolute must is also a ride on the historic narrow-gauge railway that connects Domodossola with Locarno and thus with Lake Maggiore. The nearly 50 km long route is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe and leads right through the impressive Centovalli with its wild mountain ranges, rugged rock formations, and breathtaking views of a unique, unspoiled landscape. For those who like to be active, the area around Premia can be wonderfully explored by bicycle or motorcycle, or on one of the many varied and romantic hiking trails to discover the untouched alpine flora and fauna. For mountaineers and winter sports enthusiasts, many renowned ski and hiking areas, including San Domenico (about 30 km) or Macugnaga at the foot of the Monte Rosa massif (about 60 km), are just a stone's throw away.
