This vacation apartment for eight people is located entirely on the first floor. From the living room with dining kitchen you immediately have the feeling of being outdoors; a long glass front leads to the garden....
There is no shortage of birds of prey here. Buzzards, sparrow hawks, goshawks and kestrels defend their territories here, as do long-eared owls and barn owls. The latter has inhabited the work shed for years, where the vacation home is now located. The barn owl was taken into account during the planning and construction. Half of the barn is still accessible to the owl, and a permanent place for the barn owl was established in the barn.
The Barn Owl is located on the Ennemaborg estate, one of the showpieces of Het Groninger Landschap. The barn dates from the fourteenth century and was rebuilt in the eighteenth century. Just behind the stately castle is a round pond with reeds, water lilies and green frogs. It is a remnant of the moat that once surrounded the castle. The front part of the estate is a park, further back is the natural forest. The one and a half km2 forest behind the park was planted 150 years ago for timber extraction. The trees are therefore neatly lined up. Today it is grazed by Konik horses, wild horses that stay on the site all year round. They can withstand extreme weather conditions well and do not need to be stabled in the winter. The grazing of the estate has made it an ideal area for the badger. This is partly due to the horse manure. The manure attracts beetles and earthworms, which are at the top of the badger's diet. But you won't spot him anytime soon. The badger is a nocturnal animal and is very shy and quiet. Thanks to the natural management and the obsolescence of the forest, more and more bird species can be found. Meanwhile, two species of woodpeckers breed here, the lesser spotted woodpecker and the great spotted woodpecker. And even the nightingale lives here.
Do you feel like exploring the area on foot? There is a 6 km long hiking trail through the Ennemaborg Estate. But a short walk through the park or in the woods is also recommended. In spring the whole park turns yellow and purple because of the many borgbloumkes, snowdrops, crocuses and wood hyacinths. In autumn you can find up to 200 species of mushrooms in the forest. Near the cottage is the beautiful carriage house. Activities are regularly organized from here. In addition, the carriage house is open on Saturdays and Sundays between 12:00 and 17:00. Take a walk and then relax on the terrace or by the fireplace and enjoy a drink.
